Thembalethu Nkomazi is implementing afterschool care centres in four villages located in around Nkomazi region. Each afterschool care centre reaches on average 100 Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs) per day from Monday to Friday.
The afterschool is equipping the OVCs through life-skills activities such as singing, acting and dancing. In addition the OVCs are taught computer skills, sewing, baking and growing vegetables in their own backyards. Through the afterschool, the organisation is able to assist OVCs with their home-works, special activities are provided that are aimed at improving their English and Mathematics.
Through the support by different donor community, our OVCs are provided with uniforms in order to reduce stigma and discrimination as a result of being orphans. We are trying by all means to improve the confidence and image of the OVCs that are supported by the organisation. In addition the hygiene is prioritised by the organisation; as a result three of the four afterschool care centres have showers. This has enabled our OVCs to bath/shower at our centres during the week which is part of also improving their image. Za Foundation is our partner.
